Foreign Relations Committee Chair: Brussels understands visa-free suspension would damage EU credibility in Georgia

The June 11 meeting is part of the European Union’s obligation to maintain dialogue with countries that enjoy visa-free travel with the bloc, and no decision has been made on suspending visa-free travel for Georgia, said Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee.

In an interview with the GPB First Channel, Samkharadze stated that the upcoming meeting will be held at a technical level.

“Regardless of what politicians may say, this meeting is a standard procedure mandated by the European Union’s regulations. The urgency surrounding the suspension of visa-free travel has diminished. Brussels also recognizes that revoking visa-free travel for Georgian citizens could harm the European Union’s image, as it may lead to a loss of trust among Georgians towards the EU.

Concerning compliance with the visa-free regime requirements, Georgia has met all the necessary technical criteria. Additionally, laws pertaining to transparency and family values have been introduced, although these issues are not directly related to visa policy. These requirements were added later as a means of pressuring the Georgian government.

We do not view this approach as correct or fair, and our delegation will aim to communicate this perspective during the meeting,” Samkharadze said.
