For Georgia's MP Khvedeliani: Citizens should unite and mark national significance day on May 26; dividing public is unacceptable
“The 26th of May belongs to every citizen, and the use of this day to serve narrow party interests or to promote partisan narratives is unacceptable to us,” declared MP Tata Khvedeliani, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party.
According to her, May 26 is a day of unity for the people of Georgia, and its appropriation for any other purpose is inadmissible.
“As a representative of the parliamentary opposition, I am not in a position to speak to the plans of the boycott opposition. The fact that they are taking certain steps to make their work more effective is to be welcomed. That they have also begun communicating with the public is equally welcome, because in our country, change comes only through elections. We were telling everyone this before the elections, back in 2025 as well. The voice of the people matters enormously, and the fate of Georgia must be decided solely and exclusively by our own citizens.
It has always been unacceptable to our team to exploit days of national significance for narrow party ends. Attaching rallies to those dates was a misguided decision. We watched the October 4 provocation, which was orchestrated within Georgian Dream. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, those who organised and participated in the demonstration on that date only served to deepen our political crisis. We now have even more people who were led astray and who today find themselves locked behind bars.
The 26th of May is a day of national significance. For us, May 26 is Independence Day. This day is ours. We shall, of course, celebrate it. It belongs to every single citizen, and exploiting it for party interests or partisan narratives is something we cannot accept. On days when the country and its people should be coming together to mark a national occasion as one, dividing the public is utterly unacceptable to us,” said Khvedeliani.
