Georgian President pardons 226 convicts

Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili pardoned 226 convicts in connection with Virgin Mary Day, known as Mariamoba in Georgia, celebrated every year on August 28.

According to the Presidential Administration, the pardon applied to 217 individuals serving prison sentences and six serving non-custodial sentences, while three individuals had their criminal records expunged.

“The exercise of the exclusive constitutional authority by the President of Georgia is based on the principle of humanism and the state interest,” the Presidential Administration said.
