For Georgia demands temporary commission to probe law enforcement actions during 2024 protests

The political party For Georgia is calling for the establishment of a temporary investigative commission to examine the legality of the use of special means by law enforcement officers during gatherings and demonstrations in November–December 2024. The issue was raised by Shalva Kereselidze at today’s Bureau session.

According to Kereselidze, allegations regarding the possible use of banned chemical substances against peaceful demonstrators have triggered strong reactions both within Georgian society and at the international level.

“Unfortunately, we hear contradictory statements every day and even forced admissions that water cannons may indeed have contained banned chemical substances. This situation justifiably raises suspicions of a systemic crime. The lives and health of Georgian citizens are at stake, and the public has the right to know what is happening. Are we dealing with isolated incidents or systemic illegality? On whose orders was the alleged use of banned substances carried out? What specific health risks were citizens exposed to?

Given the low level of public trust in the judicial and investigative systems, and the frequent political influence over justice—especially when potential responsibility may extend to high-ranking political officials—there is a clear need for an independent investigation. Such an investigation is necessary not only to identify those responsible and establish the truth, which should also be in the government’s interest, but also to ensure a timely assessment of the health risks faced by affected citizens,” Kereselidze stated.
