FM: Some actors exploiting visa liberalization issue to mislead citizens

Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili says the meeting scheduled for June 11 at the European Commission is of a technical nature and is aimed at addressing the conditions the EU has set for holders of diplomatic and service passports.

According to Botchorishvili, the EU’s information regarding the June 11 meeting was presented in a confusing manner, which led to misinterpretations.

“The meeting scheduled for June 11 at the European Commission falls under EU regulations. If the visa liberalization suspension mechanism is activated through an EU decision, the European side is required to engage in a structured dialogue with the relevant third country— in this case, Georgia—about how to proceed in this matter.

This meeting is technical and will take place at the working level, as outlined by EU procedures. However, the initial communication from the EU on this issue has led to misunderstandings and incorrect interpretations.

We have also observed statements from various politicians and activists using the visa liberalization issue as a means of political pressure or to instill unnecessary fear among citizens, suggesting that visa liberalization for Georgian citizens is under threat. These narratives are misleading.

We anticipate that the meeting will be constructive, as it is in our mutual interest to discuss, in a practical and professional manner, how to address the conditions that prompted the activation of the suspension mechanism regarding Georgia.

We will await the outcome of the June 11 meeting and will provide further comments afterward. Until then, it would be preferable for political actors and other stakeholders to refrain from speculation on this topic, as it could harm relations between Georgia and the European Union,” Botchorishvili said.

The European Commission spokesperson said today that the June 11 meeting is intended to address the circumstances that led to the suspension of the visa-free regime for diplomatic and service passport holders.
