FM Maka Botchorishvili: New U.S. Administration inherited negative legacy on Georgia; State Secretary calls for review

“We hope that in the very near future we will see concrete steps taken by the USA, firstly to normalise relations with Georgia and then to address those issues we have discussed many times,” Georgia’s Foreign Minister, Maka Botchorishvili, told journalists.

According to her, Georgia wants to turn a new page in strategic relations with the United States.

“I had the opportunity to speak with the Secretary of State during the opening of the Milan Olympics. One thing is clear and understood: the new administration inherited a very negative legacy regarding Georgia. The Secretary of State clearly stated that all of this must be reviewed and that relations with Georgia should be brought somewhat to the USA’s agenda. We hope that in the very near future we will see concrete steps taken by the USA, firstly to normalise relations with Georgia and then to address those issues we have discussed many times. We want a strategic partnership from a clean slate, a strategic partnership that will be laden with substance, taking into account the interests of both countries,” Maka Botchorishvili stated.

When asked how she assesses opposition representatives’ statements that official meetings don’t take place in corridors, Maka Boеchorishvili stated that even in a short time, they managed to focus attention on the important issues on the Georgia-U.S. agenda.

“Over the course of the two days, we had the opportunity to engage with U.S. representatives. On the first day, most of the communication was with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, while on the second day, the discussions with Secretary of State Marco Rubio were quite substantive. Even in a brief period, we succeeded in drawing attention to the key issues currently on the Georgia-United States agenda,” Maka Botchorishvili noted.

Moreover, Maka Botchorishvili has expectations that the issue of reviewing relations with Georgia will be raised more actively on the USA’s agenda.

“You know that in parallel, the Deputy Foreign Minister was in Washington, holding meetings with quite high-level representatives in various institutions. Of course, this also presented a valuable opportunity to explore the details of our relationship more thoroughly. We have expectations that the issue of reviewing relations with Georgia will be raised more actively on the United States’ agenda,” Maka Bochorishvili stated.
