First Vice Speaker: Arrival of ambassadors for expression of condolences may balance silence from European capitals

“Propaganda had dominated for a long time that everything is Russian and that the Georgian church is pro-Russian because it does not offend the Russian church or refrains from making harsh statements. The Georgian government is also called pro-Russian because it avoids confrontation that could be a fatal verdict for the country,” said Gia Volski, First Vice Speaker.

According to Volski, this is a trend that European leaders could not oppose, and faced confusion.

“European Ambassadors arrived on the Patriarch’s funeral day and expressed their condolences. An ugly trend has emerged that the Georgian government is supposedly pro-Russian, and the church that supports it has been labelled as some kind of pro-Russian structure.

The attitude comes from what we have witnessed. Our gratitude to the Ambassadors, who paid tribute to the Georgian church and the Patriarch. However, making no statements that we have heard from the U.S. on the part of Marco Rubio is an expression of the fact that they are considering the church from a political perspective and are not paying attention to the expression of the real attitude, which has been demonstrated by a large part of society.

They have established a certain trend that was opposed by the largest part of society. This uncertainty established a political attitude, and they attempted to cover the country’s reality with this political trend. Their silence did not express any support or sympathy over the trouble that shocked Georgia. This is regrettable, though their arrival for condolences may balance the silence which we heard from European capitals,” he said.
