Federalists’ Chergoleishvili: "Eight" is gone; new era of democratic coordination emerges beyond UNM and Lelo’s reach

“The ‘Eight’ no longer exists; what you will now witness is the real coordination among democratic parties, which neither the United National Movement (UNM) nor Lelo will be able to influence,” declared Tamar Chergoleishvili, leader of the Federalists party, during an interview with a media outlet.

Chergoleishvili identified the parties she considers genuinely democratic.

“The ‘Eight’ was a thing of the past, mainly associated with the boycott, and with the waning relevance of that boycott, the ‘Eight’ has become obsolete as well. Droa party was part of the ‘Eight’, and we had a solid working relationship. What you will see now is the coordination among democratic parties. Neither the United National Movement nor Lelo will be able to interfere with this process.

Ultimately, it is our voters who will deliver the verdict, but we refuse to legitimise oligarchic forces, whether it’s Bidzina Ivanishvili’s, Khazaradze’s, or Saakashvili’s autocratic influence. I consider the following parties to be genuine democrats: Freedom Square, Droa, Girchi, and Ahali. Over the past months, I have tested these parties through numerous rallies and campaigns, and we have maintained constructive cooperation.

European Georgia was part of the United National Movement alliance, and I am uncertain of their current stance. Both Strategy Aghmashenebeli and European Georgia remain within the United National Movement coalition, and they have yet to leave. Therefore, I cannot speak definitively about them. Essentially, Strategy Aghmashenebeli and European Georgia are still aligned with the UNM,” Chergoleishvili explained.

Additionally, Chergoleishvili expressed her view that former President Salome Zourabichvili will be the figure instrumental in ensuring genuinely free elections.

“Salome Zourabichvili is still regarded as the leading figure who can oversee free elections when the democratic process reaches a critical point. She is the most suitable to assume that role and serve as the voice of democratic protest in dialogue with the international community,” she stated.
