Ex-President Zourabichvili: Refusing to impose sanctions on Russia signified support for its actions
“Georgia’s refusal to impose sanctions on Russia represented a political stance that effectively signalled ‘we are on your side,'” stated former President Salome Zourabichvili.
Commenting on whether she believed Georgia should have imposed sanctions on Russia, Zourabichvili replied, “It was a scandal to arrive here and say that I am not joining the sanctions without even knowing what the sanctions entail or their purpose.”
Commenting on the issue of sending volunteers, the former president clarified, “Volunteers signify a willingness to help, but that does not equate to engagement in a war. The war originates from a single country, and as we stand here, we must recognize that the nation initiating conflict with its neighbour is unequivocal. Until this nation occupies even a square kilometre of any of its neighbouring territories, it remains an imperialist aggressor. Those who are close to this country will always be fearful of the prospect of war. The threat of war does not emanate from any other source, and if Georgia has failed to grasp this reality, then I question whether we have truly learned from our history.”
While visiting the junkers memorial in Kojori, Salome Zourabichvili emphasized that February 25 symbolizes Georgians’ commitment to never surrender their independence or freedom.
“February 25 is a day of resilience intertwined with hope. It represents the unwavering spirit of the Georgian people, who refuse to relinquish either independence or freedom despite adversity. Those who gathered here and could not vocalize the word ‘Russia’ do not genuinely respect or honour the memories of these individuals. The people, the youth who fought in Tabakhmela and Kojori, persevered until the end. They did not abandon their homeland; they did not kneel but stood resolutely for a free and independent country.
Today, as we enjoy our freedom and independence, we are the heirs of that struggle—of the spirit, dedication, and commitment that have brought us to this moment. This legacy traces back centuries and will continue for centuries to come. It is always worth fighting, fighting to the end. February 25 symbolizes such a struggle rather than submission,” she concluded.
