Ex-President Saakashvili: When vote is stolen, street protest becomes necessary path
“The street gave rise to the Rose Revolution, twice Maidan, the street delivered the Arab Spring, and is now bringing revolution to Morocco. When the vote is stolen from you, this becomes not merely a solution, but a necessary path,” wrote Georgia’s former President Mikheil Saakashvili on social media.
“I want to address that small segment of society that believes we should have participated in elections, fearing that otherwise, politics will die.
You cannot take part in something that doesn’t exist. Will politics die as a result? Quite the opposite.
Let me tell you a story. In the early 2000s, the opposition held a conference in Gudauri, and we had invited the renowned Professor Shlomo Avineri from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
At the time, Zurab Zhvania and Nino Burjanadze were hesitant about the wisdom of street protests. Shlomo interrupted them and said, Why are you afraid of street demonstrations? This is surely the most legitimate and effective means of politics.
The street gave rise to the Rose Revolution, twice Maidan, the street delivered the Arab Spring, and is now bringing revolution to Morocco. When the vote is stolen from you, this becomes not merely a solution, but a necessary path.
In their ‘elections’, Georgian Dream managed to secure only 20% of the electorate, plus small percentages from other participating parties. But the 70% must direct their energy to a different arena: street protests, strikes, civil disobedience, and social media activity.
We must not operate by the rules of a Russian occupation dictatorship. We must not sit down at the table to play with a cheat. We must find our own way. This may not happen in two or three days, but whoever takes the right path, success and victory will be theirs!” writes Mikheil Saakashvili on Facebook.
