European Integration Committee Chair: PACE drafts resolution on Georgia is full of falsehoods
“The draft resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is full of falsehoods. If they have something to say, instead of issuing resolutions and statements, they should engage directly with the government elected by the Georgian people,” said Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the European Integration Committee of the Georgian Parliament.
According to Makhashvili, the resolution reflects the political interests of certain members of the Council of Europe.
“The Council of Europe as an institution is not concerned; rather, certain members and politicians within the Council are using its platforms for their own political interests. Unfortunately, these are the same individuals who were involved in the ‘special operation’ against the Georgian state ahead of the parliamentary elections, particularly concerning election processes and observation. They are actively trying to obstruct the ongoing constitutional process aimed at transforming, rehabilitating, and lawfully excluding representatives of the collective National Movement from Georgia’s political space. This process is entirely legal and constitutional and will be held to a higher standard than similar proceedings in their own countries. Their removal from the political arena will be conducted through these constitutional means. I have read the draft resolution, and it is full of falsehoods. Their behavior resembles a game of broken telephone—where information changes with each retelling until it no longer reflects reality.
If they have arguments or criticisms, they should present them directly to the government elected by the Georgian people instead of hiding behind resolutions and statements. Gossip and misrepresentation are not a substitute for dialogue. Even if a million European politicians claim that a microphone is a machine, it does not make it one. The truth remains unchanged. They should come and speak directly to our population and our government, where we are ready to answer any legitimate questions,” Makhashvili stated.
In addition, Makhashvili responded to the part of the resolution that discusses the local elections scheduled for October 4 in Georgia: “Regarding the upcoming local elections in Georgia, the Assembly deplores the fact that its call for an immediate, inclusive process to establish an electoral environment conducive to new, genuinely democratic elections was not implemented.”
“During the parliamentary elections, their representatives were here, and we all saw their real actions. Instead of responsibly fulfilling their observer roles, they engaged in a political assault—a special operation against the Georgian state and its elections.
Frankly, I am not concerned about their concerns. They have their role; we, as the government, have ours—a responsibility before the Georgian people. We remain open to those who are genuinely interested in observing elections and supporting the democratic process. However, we will not allow those who treat elections as a political tool to push their own agenda,” he declared.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) prepared a draft resolution titled “Uphold democracy and the rule of law in Georgia.” The authors of this draft are Edite Estrela of the Socialists, Democrats and Greens Group, and Sabina Cudic of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe.
