EU Integration Committee Chair: Support for U.S. resolution on Ukraine is about its core essence - call for peace

“What the United States should have included in the resolution – we can ask America about that, but our purpose in supporting the resolution is that its main essence is a call for peace,” stated Levan Makhashvili, European Integration Committee Chair.

According to him, since the war began, “our primary call has been for peace, because peace in Ukraine is not just peace in Ukraine – it means peace throughout the entire region.”

“Of course, this is very important for us. Of course, we will support the resolution in the vote. The resolution has several co-sponsors, and we were among the first. Who will support it will become clear during the vote, but it’s been three years since the war began, and we can say many things. We said that we had seen this movie before. This wasn’t only about our unfortunate experience of having our own Bucha and Mariupol in the form of Gagra or Tamarasheni.

We had already mourned this and knew what tragedy would unfold in Ukraine. When we said we had seen all this before, it also applied to the end of the war. Unfortunately, what we witnessed in 2008 is being repeated, when eight months after the war, America and Russia ‘reset’ their relations as if nothing had happened on Earth. This may be undesirable for some, and we understand that we live in an unimaginable world, but in reality, for anyone who knows the ABCs of international relations, nothing here is unimaginable. Yes, it’s unacceptable and even immoral, but this is reality. This is precisely why we talked about putting emotions aside and making decisions pragmatically. Unfortunately, what happened in 2008 has repeated itself, and Georgia’s government made difficult but correct decisions,” Makhashvili stated.
