EU Integration Committee Chair argues opposition’s inability to unite due to diverging ambitions
“The opposition will fail to unite primarily because of their internal differences and conflicting viewpoints,” said Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the European Integration Committee.
He pointed out that while the opposition may attempt to rally around former President Salome Zourabichvili, this effort is likely to be fruitless.
“Although opposition parties share similar approaches and exhibit a degree of radicalization, their individual ambitions will prevent them from uniting for the benefit of the country. Their primary objective is to gain power rather than to contribute positively to national welfare.
We have little expectation of their unity, though some of their ideas and opinions were anticipated. They are leaning on the former president and will try to build a platform around her; however, as in the past, they are unlikely to succeed in this endeavour,” he stated.
Giorgi Vashadze, one of the leaders of the Unity-National Movement coalition, emphasized the need for substantial unity among the opposition. He urged former President Salome Zourabichvili to take the lead in forming a unified platform.
