Education Minister says staff and student numbers to remain unchanged despite universities' merger
Givi Mikanadze, Georgia’s Minister of Education, Science and Youth, clarified that the merger of Tbilisi State University and Georgian Technical University will not lead to a reduction in the number of academic staff or enrolled students.
Mikanadze emphasised that the Ministry’s primary aim is to implement essential reforms within the education system transparently and with active societal involvement.
“It is important to clarify that, as part of these ongoing reforms, there are no plans to downsize the academic workforce. We intend to retain as many staff members as possible and will make every effort to ensure their expertise and knowledge are utilised both in teaching and in research and scientific activities.
Additionally, we have decided to maintain current student intake quotas and will not be reducing enrolment numbers. Our objective is to carry out fundamental reforms openly and collaboratively, with the community’s engagement,” Givi Mikanadze stated.
During a briefing today, the Minister announced that the two universities would merge, with the combined institution retaining the name Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University.
