EC representative alarmed by Georgia's draft legislation concerning amendments to foreign funding and political activity
“We are particularly alarmed by the draft legislation concerning amendments on foreign funding and political activity,” European Commission representative Jean-Baptiste Le Bras expressed concern about the legislative changes related to foreign funding and political activity during a meeting of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, where Georgia’s situation was being discussed.
He stated that “this represents an escalation of actions aimed at restricting civil and democratic space.”
“Regrettably, since the publication of the report, the Georgian authorities have continued to engage in hostile, anti-EU rhetoric, as well as taken further measures that go in the wrong direction. We are particularly alarmed by the draft legislation concerning amendments on foreign funding and political activity, which passed the second reading last week in the Georgian Parliament. In our view, this initiative marks a further escalation in the authorities’ efforts to severely restrict the country’s civic and democratic space,” Jean-Baptiste Le Bras has said.
