Davit Sakvarelidze: Georgia has chance to become a key U.S. logistics hub in region
“I would like to express my opinion as a Georgian and a patriot: Georgia now has a historic opportunity to achieve what we have all dreamed of—a direct military agreement with the United States and the deployment of U.S. military units on Georgian territory as a guarantee of the country’s future security,” Davit Sakvarelidze, former Deputy Prosecutor General of Georgia, currently in Ukraine, said on Formula TV.
According to Sakvarelidze, the United States is likely to restructure its logistics in the region.
“The U.S. will, in one way or another, have to confront Iran in the future, and Georgian ports, Georgian territory, Armenian territory, and Azerbaijani territory could become a logistics hub, similar to the role Japan played during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Japan became the United States’ main logistics center during those conflicts, which helped the country recover and prosper.
Many people may not know this, but when I was studying in Japan, my professors explained that although Japan had been devastated by war, it was also rebuilt because it became the principal logistics base for the Korean and Vietnam wars,” Sakvarelidze said.
He added that, for a country the size of Georgia, a direct agreement with the United States and the deployment of U.S. military units would be a historic opportunity.
“For a country the size of Georgia, a direct agreement with America, stronger economic ties with the U.S., relocating production there, and deploying American military units to prevent Russia from invading Georgia again would be a dream. Missing such an opportunity would be a historic mistake.
Ivanishvili, of course, is not going to do this because he is physically afraid of Putin. He fears Putin. He believes, for example, that Charles Michel will not fire a ballistic missile at him, but Putin might launch an Iskander missile at his residence. For this reason, he does not want to enter into direct confrontation with Russia or anyone else. He will not sign such an agreement because of his personal security concerns and his economic and financial calculations,” Davit Sakvarelidze said.
