Croatian President: I won't let EU bureaucracy speak for me; Georgia has no relations with Moscow, yet is still accused of being pro-Russian

“Georgia is a country that does not maintain diplomatic relations with Moscow and is accused of being a Russian agent. I do not understand this, and that is why I decided to come personally to see what is really happening,” stated the President of Croatia, Zoran Milanović, during a briefing held alongside Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili.

He explained that his visit to Georgia is a gesture of solidarity.

“It is a great honour to be here in Georgia today and tomorrow. I have come as a friend to a dear host. I have come to express solidarity. I see this as a gesture of support, although in recent years, solidarity has often been marred by cynicism. I have come here to stand with Georgia in its efforts to maintain territorial integrity, and I fully support this cause.

Georgia has faced a difficult period over the past few years, and we must take this into account when assessing your country’s rapprochement with the European Union. Unfortunately, the opposite is happening, and your country finds itself confronted with impossible dilemmas, which Kavelashvili describes as a very cynical situation. The Brussels bureaucracy, the European Union’s bureaucracy, is orchestrating this.

They cannot speak for me, and I will not allow them to speak on behalf of Croatia. That is why I have come here personally to say frankly: ‘There was no visit from the European Union in 2025. I apologise for this statement, but it is simply crazy.’ I wanted to visit a country that is accused of being pro-Russian, of having pro-Moscow or pro-Putin tendencies, but my experience has been quite different. I may be mistaken, but this is a country that does not maintain diplomatic relations with Moscow and is nonetheless accused of being a Russian agent. I do not understand this, which is why I decided to come here in person to see for myself what is truly going on,” said Zoran Milanović.
