ComCom attends Georgian Internet Industry Forum 2026

Communications Commission member Ekaterine Imedadze and fellow representatives from the regulator participated in the “Georgian Internet Industry Forum 2026”, organised by the Association of Small and Medium Telecom Operators of Georgia.

According to the agency, the ComCom team took part in several thematic sessions to brief representatives of small and medium-sized telecom companies on current developments and plans in electronic communications, telecom market research and regulation, as well as the development of IP peering and Internet Exchange Points (IXP).

During the forum’s main session, Ekaterine Imedadze spoke about key developments and strategic initiatives across the electronic communications sector.

The forum also addressed the government’s broadband expansion scheme, technological and market developments, and the broader challenges confronting the sector.

ComCom representatives provided participants with detailed insights into telecom market trends and ongoing initiatives designed to foster competition. Key discussions focused on comprehensive market research, which included analyses of physical communications infrastructure, the wholesale market for high-quality leased-line services for corporate subscribers, IP transit (global and local connectivity), and trunk as well as inter-settlement backhaul capacity markets.

In addition, ComCom officials met with representatives from EURO-IX and IXP.GE to review current infrastructure and map out future steps to reinforce Georgia’s internet exchange architecture. Attendees also examined a ComCom-commissioned study by Plum Consulting. The international consultancy highlighted the bottlenecks stalling IP peering and IXP growth nationwide, while setting out key recommendations to drive market development.

Expanding Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) boosts the capacity for direct, local traffic exchange between networks, thereby enhancing connectivity quality and reducing latency. Exchanging traffic locally reduces reliance on international transit and lowers operational costs, while fostering the development of the domestic digital ecosystem and a competitive market environment.
