The mosque and the synagogue stand side by side in Tbilisi; this is the main factor for Georgia’s success – tolerance, openness and the ability to learn from the lessons of the past, – Christine Lagarde, Managing Director (MD) and Chairwoman of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) made this statement during the meeting with the students at the State Ceremonies Palace in Tbilisi.

“When I walked through the streets of Tbilisi this morning, I was impressed by the sights of Old Tbilisi, which has become a top destination for visitors from across the globe. Many come to see these streets in Tbilisi, which are an expression of unique traditions and culture at the intersection of the West and the East.

On these streets, you can see temples of various religious denominations. Christian churches, mosques, synagogues and others. The mosque and the synagogue stand side by side in Tbilisi; this is the main factor for Georgia’s success – tolerance, openness and the ability to learn from the lessons of the past”, – Christine Lagarde said.

The IMF Managing Director remarked that after regaining independence, Georgia went through a challenging period, “a sharp drop in living standards and a collapsing manufacturing sector”.

“With these painful wounds, Georgia started a new phase. Over the past years, Georgia has set an example of a remarkable transformation.  The country has moved from an agriculture-based economy to service industries, including tourism, increased incomes, enhanced trade and created one of the world’s most welcoming business environments”, – Christine Lagarde said.

Managing Director (MD) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has started working visit to Georgia today.
