Cargo turnover at Georgian seaports rises 21%, container handling up 8%
The maritime transport sector in Georgia has shown significant growth in the first four months of 2026, according to the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.
Between January and April 2026, Georgian ports and terminals handled a total of 5,949,115 tons of cargo, marking a 21% increase compared to the same period last year.
The ministry reported that container traffic also continued its upward trend. During the reporting period, container throughput reached 258,583 TEU, an 8% year-on-year increase.
Officials noted positive dynamics across all major ports in the country. Growth was recorded across all key cargo categories, reflecting broader development of Georgia’s transit corridor activity.
Ferry cargo volumes increased by 34%, while general cargo rose by 33%. Containerized cargo (by weight) grew by 10%, and bulk cargo increased by 8%.
The ministry stated that the 2026 data once again confirms Georgia’s growing strategic role as a regional logistics hub and highlights the efficiency of its maritime infrastructure in handling increasing cargo flows.
