33 years since start of armed conflict in Abkhazia

Thirty-three years have passed since the beginning of armed hostilities in Abkhazia.

The armed conflict in Abkhazia began on August 14, 1992, when Georgian armed forces entered the territory to protect the railway. The main phase of the war lasted 13 months and 13 days, concluding on September 27, 1993, with the fall of Sokhumi. The fall of Sokhumi was preceded by negotiations between the parties with Russian participation.

On July 27, the Sochi Agreement was signed, which was unilaterally violated by the Abkhazian side when the Georgian side had withdrawn heavy military equipment from Abkhazia.

As a result of the war, up to 300,000 people were forced to leave the territory of Abkhazia. The armed conflict resulted in the deaths of up to 10,000 people from the Georgian side, including both soldiers and civilians.
