Patriarchate urges government for regulation of street vending at churches

The Georgian Patriarchate urges the government and first of all the Culture Ministry for taking active steps with the purpose to regulate street vending on the nearby territories of churches and give a civilized form to such activities.

The statement released by the Patriarchate about the situation at Jvari Monastery says that the situation is unfavorable. “We understand that vendors are making money to support their families but tourists are placed in an inconvenient condition. The churches are looking down with glory from the past and it is not pleasant to portray Georgia next to them in such a messy form,” reads the statement.

The territory leading to Jvari Monastery in the outskirts of Mtskheta town has been closed for street vendors for already the second day. Tourists are trying to enter the territory from other paths.
