MP Sarjveladze sees no ground to stop Supreme Court judge nomination

There is no ground or reason to stop the process of the Supreme Court judges nomination, said Mikheil Sarjveladze, Chairman of the parliamentary Human Rights Committee. According to Sarjveladze, Georgia’s partners might have a different viewpoint about the process. He said a discussion of the issue was planned.

“Some individuals, including partners, may have different assumptions, expectations and understanding of the document (April 19th EU-brokered agreement). We will probably have the opportunity to discourse this. Presumably, it will reveal what other reforms are to be implemented and how long the selection of judges should be suspended. This document needs to clarify this because it is a process to be carried out under strict rules. I do not think our position is stubborn as if it were the document envisaging the suspension would not have been signed,” Sarjveladze said.

EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell reiterated Georgia’s partners’ standpoint to pause with the Supreme Court Judges appointment process earlier on Friday.
