MP Mikheil Sarjveladze appointed as Health Minister

Mikheil Sarjveladze, MP of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party has been appointed as the Minister of IDPs, Labor, Health and Social Affairs.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced about the new minister’s appointment at the briefing. He said that he held consultations over the selection of the candidate with the ruling party members and medical society last week.

“The opinions differed between the belief if the minister had to be or not a medical representative. I decided that the candidate should not necessarily be a member of the medical community. I gave preference to the member of our political team who I trust based on his professionalism and experience,” the PM said.

Mikheil Sarjveladze, Chairman of the parliamentary Human Rights and Civic Integration Committee replaced Zurab Azarashvili on the position.

Zurab Azarashvili, former Georgian Minister of IDPs, Labor, Health and Social Affairs, resigned on March 1. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said the medical community had recently expressed discontent over communication with the Minister of Health Zurab Azarashvili.
