German Ambassador – Mr. Rurua is not mentioned in March 8 Agreement

Mr. Rurua (Giorgi Rurua, Founder and shareholder of Main Channel) is not mentioned in March 8 Agreement, it is clear and everybody can read it. I am surprised that he became the issue of discussion among the parties – German Ambassador to Georgia Hubert Knirsch told reporters.

“The main problem that we faced was the polarization of political forces in Georgia and it was so acute that they could not meet and work on a compromise without diplomats. We took that role because of this circumstance. The 90% of negotiations was concentrated on election system, number of MPs elected through direct rule and the final number was agreed – 30. Hard talks were ongoing during months,” Hubert Knirsch said.

According to German Ambassadors, the polarization was not as strong as it seemed during the negotiations process. The parties brought arguments. He also said that he expected that Monday, June 29, would be decisive for fulfillment of the agreement.

Hubert Knirsch said he hoped that all political parties, which were involved in the negotiations or their representatives, would take part in the voting process and would back Constitutional Amendments.

“Mr. Rurua is not mentioned in March 8 Agreement, it is clear and everybody can read it. I am somehow surprised that he became the issue of discussion among the parties now. The opposition says that if Constitutional Amendments are put down in the parliament, the ruling party will be blamed for that. The majority says that if adoption of the changes fails, it will happen because the opposition did not participate in the balloting,” Knirsch said.

German Ambassador said that the case did not have to do with accusations but deserving and appraisal. If Constitutional Amendments are approved, and I hope this happens so, then those, who support them in the parliament will be praised,” the Ambassador claimed.
