WTO Official: Georgia’s WTO journey example of economic modernization

“What Georgia has accomplished over the past 25 years is a clear example of how a country can leverage WTO membership to modernize its economy,” stated Maika Oshikawa, Head of the WTO Accession Division, during a ceremony in Geneva marking the 25th anniversary of the country’s accession to the World Trade Organization.

“We began our cooperation with Georgia through its accession process, and today is a significant milestone not only for Georgia but for the WTO as well. We are very proud of Georgia’s achievements in economic development, diversification, and its emergence as a regional economic hub,” Maika Oshikawa declared.

Highlighting Georgia’s growing role in transport and trade, Koshikawa emphasized the country’s rising international profile.

“It’s hard to find another country that exemplifies the benefits of WTO membership as well as Georgia does. I encourage Georgia to share its experience—especially with countries still in the accession process—so they can see the tangible benefits for their economies and people,” she added.
