We must listen to each other or all fail: Droa’s Khoshtaria calls for constructive debate
“There are red lines that no group has ever crossed, nor will cross, I believe. At the same time, we should continuously discuss fighting tactics. That’s why criticism is welcome, but don’t break down an open door,” wrote Droa Party leader Elena Khoshtaria on social media.
She emphasised that open debate on tactics, criticism, and questions is essential for fostering a healthy environment, and that listening to each other is vital.
“Debates about fighting tactics, criticism, questions, and related issues are not only useful but necessary. This should become the norm for establishing a healthy, constructive environment. If we fail to listen to each other, we all risk losing. However, it’s equally important to preserve a spirit of unity within these debates, as that unity is crucial for our collective struggle. We must listen attentively and respectfully to every opinion expressed, including those shared on any broadcast,” Khoshtaria stated.
Addressing her recent comments on a broadcast, Khoshtaria clarified: “Of course, I had no intention of targeting any specific group, and I was surprised when one group, ‘Unity,’ somehow interpreted this as a personal message. I want to clarify: the fact that months have passed in our struggle does not mean wasted time or lack of results. Our conscious choice is not violent actions like those seen in the 1990s, but principled and firm resistance aimed at dismantling the regime. This resistance does not involve ‘butterflies’ or superficial gestures—when I have personally been involved in physical confrontations with violent police officers and will continue to be, because it is just and necessary. If my words caused misunderstandings, I apologise; I may not have expressed myself clearly.”
Khoshtaria reaffirmed her stance on red lines and tactics: “There are red lines that no group has ever crossed, nor will cross, I believe. And there are fighting tactics that we should continually discuss. That’s why criticism is acceptable, but don’t break down an open door. Respect to all fellow fighters,” she declared.
For context, Elena Khoshtaria earlier clarified her position against violent overthrow: “I do not support violence or an abrupt, revolutionary overthrow. On the contrary, I will actively work to prevent it. A sudden, violent overthrow—an instant resolution—is, frankly, an act of violence that we do not endorse. We will not facilitate or support such actions; instead, we will oppose them. This kind of upheaval could only serve the interests of Russia and the Georgian Dream government. Historically, there have been moments when people took up arms and overthrew regimes overnight, but we do not want that situation in Georgia. Our country doesn’t need it, and it must not happen,” Khoshtaria concluded.
