UNM's Tsiskarishvili condemns "repressive law" that bars Saakashvili from court participation and public speech

“Under the new repressive law, Mikheil Saakashvili [now jailed former President of Georgia] is prohibited from participating in court hearings or presenting his position to the public,” stated Petre Tsiskarishvili, Secretary General of the United National Movement party.

He emphasised that this was a vital opportunity for Saakashvili to communicate directly with the public.

“Amidst these oppressive restrictions—designed to suppress transparency, media coverage, and the court proceedings—Saakashvili’s ability to defend himself has been severely limited. He is denied permission to attend hearings, speak, or convey his message to the people. This was an essential platform for him to address his supporters and the broader public, and it has been unjustly taken away. We requested permission several days ago, but to date, we have received no response regarding his participation,” Tsiskarishvili told journalists.

The Law on Common Courts stipulates that photography, filming, video recording, and broadcasting are prohibited within court premises—including the courtroom and courthouse—unless conducted by the court itself or by an authorised person.
