UNM’s Pavlenishvili: Nika Gvaramia’s statement is logical; every opposition figure should have claim to govern in future

“Every opposition figure should have a right to govern the country in the future; otherwise, the Georgian people will decide for themselves,” said Irakli Pavlenishvili, a member of the United National Movement.

Pavlenishvili was asked to comment on a statement made by one of the leaders of the Opposition Alliance, Nika Gvaramia: “You look at us as the next government. I am neither ashamed nor troubled to say this.”

According to Pavlenishvili, this is a logical stance.

“It is a reasonable assertion, given that Ivanishvili’s regime is entirely illegitimate; it lacks the public trust and legitimacy necessary to govern. Naturally, every opposition figure should have a claim to lead the country in the future; otherwise, the Georgian people will decide. Nika Gvaramia and many others are well aware of this. Logically, he seeks a role in the future government. In politics, when you are in opposition and regarded as a leader, it is legitimate to aspire to govern. Particularly when the current regime has lost all legitimacy, credibility, and support. As we have stated repeatedly, and as Nika Gvaramia has also said, the composition of any future government will be determined through fair elections,” Pavlenishvili explained.

Furthermore, Pavlenishvili noted that the opposition’s primary objective might simply be staying in resistance.

“We plan to oppose authoritarianism. When we discuss the country’s situation, the only viable strategy is to remain in opposition. This is a plan in itself. When specific actions are decided upon, they will be announced; you will see information campaigns. Very soon, you will hear about concrete initiatives,” he added.
