UNM's Baramidze: We will remove this regime peacefully

“Yes — we will remove this regime peacefully. We will organize a peaceful revolution, a right protected by the Constitution,” said Giorgi Baramidze, a member of the opposition United National Movement party.

Baramidze stated that any peaceful, non-violent action is both legal and constitutional.

“We are approaching October 4. We believe the call of the National Movement — and of the movement Rustaveli Avenue, led by Paata Burchuladze — will be heard. On October 4, Georgian society should gather not at what the regime calls elections, but in the streets of our cities. First and foremost, we will gather on Rustaveli Avenue to say, together and peacefully, “no” to the gang of traitors and criminals.

Yes — we will remove this regime peacefully. We will organize a peaceful revolution, a right protected by the Constitution. Any action that is peaceful and non-violent is legal and constitutional. Peaceful protest and nonviolent civic action are legitimate means of expressing the will of the people. There are recent examples of peaceful transitions in the region, and Georgia itself experienced a peaceful, constitutional change in 2003. Since then, Georgia has followed the path of Euro-Atlantic integration.
The regime fears the Georgian people taking to the streets and will try to label legitimate protests as riots or illegal acts. We reject violence and coercion — no one here calls for force. Georgian society will peacefully bring this regime to an end; that outcome is inevitable,” he said.

When a journalist asked whether calls to “overthrow” the government could be punishable under criminal law, Baramidze replied: “No peaceful action can be considered unconstitutional or illegal. Even if we use the word ‘overthrow,’ when it is framed as non-violent and peaceful, it does not fall under the criminal provisions you mentioned. If, as a result, the regime collapses and its leaders leave, that is the consequence of the government’s own actions.”
