“We agree on two key demands: the release of political prisoners and new elections. However, society expects more, and the president’s speech should have reflected these expectations,” stated Levan Sanikidze, the United National Movement (UNM) party member, commenting on former president Salome Zourabichvili’s address at the March 31 protest.
While expressing satisfaction at the turnout of tens of thousands of people at the protest, Sanikidze wished that more individuals had addressed the demonstrators.
According to Sanikidze, Salome Zourabichvili’s speech contained nothing new. Regarding her initiative, he emphasized that the UNM has been part of a resistance platform for 13 years.
“We welcome anyone who is motivated to end Bidzina Ivanishvili’s regime in this country, whether it be Salome Zourabichvili or any other figure. We will remain in constant coordination,” he remarked.
In response to allegations about displaying photos of Mikheil Saakashvili during the protest, Sanikidze asserted that the UNM “has the right to showcase the banner” of an individual who is internationally recognized as a political prisoner.
“If the opposition fears Misha’s two banners, how will they succeed in the fight against Bidzina Ivanishvili’s regime? They should consider stepping away from Georgian politics. That would be my advice to them,” he concluded.
Former president Salome Zourabichvili addressed demonstrators at the March 31 protest on Rustaveli Avenue, proposing the establishment of a resistance platform.
