UNM Chair: Georgia missing opportunities in economic projects due to government capture

Tina Bokuchava, chairwoman of Georgia’s National Movement, commented on the visit of Peter Andreoli, a representative of the US State Department’s Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, following the opposition’s meeting with the diplomat.

“This visit is important for us so that Georgia can maximize the benefits of economic projects, especially with strong US interest in the region. Unfortunately, this is not possible today because the government is captured by the regime,” Bokuchava said.

She added that Andreoli’s itinerary, which included visits to the ports of Poti and Anaklia, signals that the visit was not intended to reset relations between Georgia and the United States.

“Any agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the implementation of projects in the South Caucasus should involve Georgia. Unfortunately, under the Ivanishvili government, Georgia is losing this major opportunity and potential. In the absence of a strategic partnership with the United States, the government is instead strengthening the influence of Russia, China, and Iran—countries with which the US is in active conflict. Our American partners are aware of this,” Bokuchava said.

“This visit does not restore the strategic partnership, but it is important for Georgia to leverage economic projects, especially given the strong US interest in the region. Unfortunately, this is not possible under a government that serves the interests of Russia, China, and Iran rather than the interests of the Georgian people and the United States,” she added.
