U.S. President on meeting with Russian President: Many points agreed, few left
“We had an extremely productive meeting, and many points were agreed to,” said U.S. President Donald Trump at the joint briefing with Russian President Vdadimir Putin following Alaska summit on Friday held with the aim to reach a deal on ending Russia’s war in Ukraine.
“We had an extremely productive meeting, and many points were agreed to,” Trump said while standing next to Putin. “And there are just a very few that are left. Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there.”
He continued: “We didn’t get there.”
Trump said he would call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders to brief them on the talks.
According to the U.S. President, he had always had a fantastic relationship with the Kremlin chief, referred to him by his first name and called Putin’s words profound.
Hours before he met Putin, Trump said his goal for the summit was a halt to the fighting between Russia and Ukraine. Hours later, when the leaders emerged from their meeting with advisers, no such deal had materialized.
“We really made some great progress today,” Trump told reporters without elaborating. “There’s no deal until there’s a deal.”
