Two new cable cars to connect key metro stations in Tbilisi, enhancing transport and easing congestion

A preliminary feasibility study, prepared by the international consulting firm Sistra, has been completed for the construction of two new cable cars in Tbilisi. Tbilisi Mayor announced this development during a session of the Tbilisi municipal government.

According to Kakha Kaladze, the new cable cars are of strategic significance, designed to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance urban transportation.

“We are committed to implementing major transport development projects in the capital. We have embarked on a responsible and complex reform, and, standing with the people of Tbilisi, we are ensuring this sector is fully modernised. As part of this initiative, we have decided to construct two new cable cars and to refurbish an existing line rather than replacing it entirely.

These cable cars are vital for the city’s strategic growth. They will reduce traffic, offer fast, eco-friendly, and affordable transport options, and help connect hard-to-reach areas. Such infrastructure projects will establish cable cars as a key mode of public transport, significantly cut travel times, and improve accessibility to metro stations,” Kaladze explained.

Tbilisi Mayor outlined that one cable car will link the metro stations Sarajishvili and Zghvisubani, while the other will connect Isani and Vazisubani.

“The cable car connecting Zghvisubani and New Park with the Sarajishvili metro station will be constructed to provide the shortest route. This four-station system is expected to serve around 22,000 passengers daily. Additionally, a cable car connecting Isani and Vazisubani will be built, featuring five stations and accommodating approximately 35,000 passengers per day, linking Vazisubani and Metromsheni with Isani.

Furthermore, the existing cable car between Samgori and Vazisubani will be dismantled, making way for a new, modern system. The feasibility study for these projects has been completed, and work on the detailed plans is currently underway. A tender for construction will be announced soon,” the mayor concluded.
