Tunnel connecting University and Kavtaradze Streets opens in Tbilisi

A new two-lane tunnel connecting University and Petre Kavtaradze Streets in the Vake district, passing through Mikheil Shavishvili Street, has been officially opened for traffic in Tbilisi.

The opening ceremony was attended by Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, and the Chairman of the City Assembly (Sakrebulo).

Mayor Kaladze highlighted this achievement as “another significant infrastructure project” completed in Georgia’s capital and expressed his commitment to realising many more in the future. He extended his gratitude to his team, the government, and construction companies for their cooperation.

“I am confident that our capital will become even more organised, greener, and more beautiful. While we have accomplished many successful projects, challenges still remain—but we are not deterred by them,” he stated.

The project features new pavements, upgraded communication and drainage systems, and LED-based modern lighting.

According to Tbilisi City Hall, the construction of the tunnel and the rehabilitation of Shavishvili Street were financed with GEL 15 million from the city budget.

This development is expected to enhance the dynamics of Tbilisi’s transportation network, significantly improve traffic flow, reduce travel times, and alleviate congestion in the area.
