The Council of the European Union has extended the mandate to Toivo Klaar, EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, for 1 year, until February 28, 2021.
Toivo Klaar previously served as head of the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia. He was appointed as EU Special Representative first in November of 2017.
The EUMM is an unarmed civilian monitoring mission. Since October 2008, it has been supporting the stabilisation and normalisation of the situation on the ground, centred on full compliance with the six-point agreement signed by Georgia and Russia in August 2008.
