Natia Mezvrishvili: We appeal everyone to protect the law and avoid escalation of the situation, otherwise, Police will act within its mandate
Natia Mezvrishvili, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia spoke about the violations revealed during the election process.
According to Deputy Minister, the Police has already reacted to several incidents – five persons were detained on the grounds of obstruction of the police and petty hooliganism under the administrative law and investigation was launched into two criminal cases.
“As already mentioned number of times, today, the main objective of the Police is to ensure public order and carry out the elections in a peaceful and safe environment. With this aim, the Police forces were allocated across the whole Georgia. we appealed everyone, including the coordinators, the representatives of the political parties and their supporters to protect the law and not to pose threat to carrying out elections in a peaceful manner.
Despite a number of requests, unfortunately, in the adjacent territories of polling stations, administrative offenses, as well as activities with signs of crime, can be observed.

According to the Deputy Minister, the MIA carried out all necessary to prevent offenses without affecting the election process.
“Despite this, unfortunately, the attempts of escalation and provocation of the situation are evident, also, the cases of resistance to the police, efforts to interfere into the police activities and confrontation, including related to so-called voters’ lists, can be observed.
Once again, we appeal everyone – the political parties, their supporters, the coordinators or observers to protect the law and avoid escalation of the situation. Otherwise, the Police will be obliged to act within its mandate in order to promptly prevent all cases of provocation and confrontation and ensure the continuance of the election process in a peaceful environment.
Regardless whoever breaks the law, the Police, as a politically neutral agency, will respond accordingly”, – Natia Mezvrishvili said.
Today, Extraordinary Mayoral Elections are being held in Marneuli, Zestaponi, Chiatura, Zugdidi and Khulo municipalities. In parallel, Sakrebulo By-elections are being conducted at local majoritarian election districts of Sagarejo, Akhmeta, Adigeni, Zestaponi, Chiatura, Tkibuli, Tskaltubi and Ozurgeti municipalities. In addition, citizens are electing majoritarian MP at Mtatsminda constituency in Tbilisi.
