Tea Tsulukiani: There are no political prisoners in Georgia, therefore, no agreement could be reached on non-existent political prisoners
There is no doubt about the fact that there are no political prisoners in Georgia today, therefore, no agreement could be reached on non-existent political prisoners, – the Minister of Justice of Georgia, Tea Tsulukiani said.
As Tea Tsulukiani noted, a written document was published as a result of the talks, which does not mention the release of any prisoners.
“Today the Georgian Parliament Speaker has urged our friends, partners, ambassadors, who mediated election talks between the ruling party and the opposition, to confirm that the Georgian Dream ruling party made no such kind of promise; to confirm that the issue of negotiations was not and could not be the intervention into the activities of judicial and prosecuting bodies or intervention into the activities of President when it comes to any type of request to pardon prisoners. It’s truly unfortunate that the unanimity that exists within the Georgian Dream team today to make our electoral system more proportionate, is not supported by the radical opposition. They spoke about the topics that are close to absurd, ”Tea Tsulukiani said.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Archil Talakvadze has urged foreign ambassadors, who mediated election talks between the ruling party and the opposition, to confirm that the Georgian Dream ruling party made no promise to release opposition leaders and members in the March 8 election agreement. He stated that making requests to the president, court or the Prosecutor’s Office to release the convicts would be illegal and wrong and the Georgian Dream would have never taken such a step.
