Tbilisi Mayor: Our people will honour Patriarch’s wishes and live with love, peace, and confidence

The Mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, once again conveyed his condolences to the nation on the passing of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude, Ilia II.

Speaking at the Tbilisi City Hall session, he reflected on the unity shown over the past five days, a period during which the country stood resilient, steadfast, and united, with the people demonstrating immense support, respect, and solidarity for the Patriarch.

“I wish to address the difficult days we have experienced following the passing of our spiritual father, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, and to extend my heartfelt condolences to all of Georgia. Since his death, our people, regardless of religious or ethnic background, have shown exceptional unity, support, and reverence for the Patriarch. For five days, the queue of citizens paying their respects at the Trinity Cathedral stretched without end, and due to the volume of visitors, we had to close several streets around the cathedral and restrict vehicle movement. Despite the inconvenience caused, we have not received a single complaint from the public. The nation was united, strong, and resolute. I am sincerely grateful for the patience and solidarity demonstrated by our citizens,” Kaladze stated.

On behalf of Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, the Mayor also thanked the municipality staff who played an active role in organising the Patriarch’s funeral and burial.

“Thanks are also due to the representatives of various religious denominations who stood with us during these difficult times, sharing in our grief and even cancelling planned ceremonies. I believe our people will honour the Patriarch’s wishes and continue to live with love, pursue their work peacefully, and face the future without anxiety. The guiding principle of our lives will be the dignity of each individual, respect, and mutual support,” Kaladze added.

Furthermore, the Mayor of Tbilisi extended his congratulations to the nation on the Day of the Restoration of the Autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church.

“I would like to seize this opportunity to wish everyone a happy celebration of this historic day, the Day of the Restoration of the Autocephaly of the Georgian Church. It is not only a religious holiday but a symbol of our national independence. A strong, autonomous Georgian Orthodox Church is a cornerstone of our national strength. Congratulations, and may God bless Georgia,” he concluded.
