Tbilisi Mayor: Georgia seeks fresh start in US ties

“All statements and letters from our government indicate that we want to start a new chapter in our relations,” Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze responded to an open letter sent by President Mikheil Kavelashvili to US President Donald Trump.

Speaking to the media, Kaladze described the period under the previous US administration as “a complete disaster”.

“I fully agree with the President’s proposals. For us, starting from a clean slate and deepening our relations with the United States is fundamentally important. We also support President Trump in fulfilling his main promises: defeating the so-called ‘Deep State’ and ending the Russia-Ukraine war. Both issues are important for Georgia, but we act in line with our national interests. The government has expressed its readiness for a strategic partnership.

What happened under the previous administration was a complete disaster. Representatives of such a powerful state shamelessly misrepresented us, portraying things as black and white. They insulted us, and their statements were filled with lies, threats, and manipulative propaganda—behavior that is completely unacceptable. Accordingly, all our statements and letters have emphasized our desire to start a new chapter. We are ready for friendship, cooperation, and partnership, and this should be bilateral,” Kaladze said.

Kaladze also highlighted the significance of recent international developments, including peace initiatives between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and Georgia’s role in regional stability. He noted that President Trump addressed issues previously raised by the ruling party, Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia, regarding the so-called ‘Deep State’.

“The new US president acted immediately, signalling the importance of addressing global challenges and exposing organizations involved in financing revolutions and coups, including in Georgia. This demonstrates that we are committed to fostering friendly relations with the United States,” Kaladze added.

The comments followed an open letter from President Mikheil Kavelashvili to President Trump, outlining Georgia’s priorities and readiness for strengthened bilateral cooperation.
