Tbilisi and Shanghai formalize sister city relationship

Tbilisi Deputy Mayor Andria Basilaia paid an official visit to Shanghai, the People’s Republic of China. During this visit, Shanghai Vice Mayor Xie Tung and Andria Basilaia signed a memorandum to establish a sister city relationship between Tbilisi and Shanghai.

According to Tbilisi City Hall, the memorandum outlines plans for cooperation across various sectors, including sports, culture, green spaces, transportation, and urban development.

During the meeting with Vice Mayor Xie Tung, the importance of strengthening the strategic partnership between Georgia and China was highlighted, along with the necessity of deepening collaboration between the two cities.

“The friendship between Tbilisi and Shanghai is particularly significant. Shanghai is China’s second-largest city, with a population of 24 million. Its economy ranks fifth globally among city economies. Shanghai’s GDP stands at $750 billion, and it is renowned for possessing the world’s largest cargo port,” said Andria Basilaia.

As part of his visit, the Deputy Mayor of Tbilisi also participated in the Shanghai International Cooperation Forum, where he addressed the event’s attendees, delegations from 26 cities worldwide, including mayors and vice-mayors of Shanghai, Liverpool, Athens, Marseille, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, and other major cities.
