Tamar Chugoshvili: Russia must remain in CoE so that we can use Strasbourg court against it as a mechanism
The First Vice Speaker, head of the Parliamentary Delegation in Strasbourg, Tamar Chugoshvili said that in recent years, the relationship has become quite tense between the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Committee of Ministers and the issue is the matter of concern for the members of Parliamentary Assembly.
“Nobody wants Russia to withdraw from the Council of Europe, because if this happens, the requirements of the Strasbourg Court will no longer apply to it. Russia must remain in the Council of Europe so that we can use the Strasbourg court against it as a mechanism. Naturally, there is quite a large interest in Russia being a member of the council, including in terms of the decisions of the Strasbourg court, but Russia must fulfill its obligations and pay a membership fee. So far it violates these terms and the issue of its exclusion may be raised, but our common task is to force Russia to start fulfilling its obligations”, – Tamar Chugoshvili said.
