Strategy Aghmashenebeli leader: MEGOBARI Act confirms political crisis in Georgia, solution is new elections under new rules

“The MEGOBARI Act confirmed a pressing political crisis in Georgia. The solution is new, general, national elections under new rules and conditions,” said Giorgi Vashadze, the Strategy Aghmashenebeli leader.

According to Vashadze, Georgia is facing an absolutely new reality following the endorsement of the MEGOBARI Act by the U.S. House of Representatives.

“How can new elections be held with those who are on the sanctioned lists – the individual who calls himself Chair of the Central Election Commission (CEC), head of the Anti-Corruption Bureau or the prosecutor who is sanctioned? Therefore, everything should change, parliamentary elections should be held, and the rest will follow. I am asking those people who intend to participate in the elections – this is not the issue of participation or non-participation. In given conditions when CEC has a potentially sanctioned chair, how can elections be held? Answer this question first,” he said.

On May 6, the U.S. House of Representatives reviewed and passed the Mobilising and Enhancing Georgia’s Options for Building Accountability, Resilience, and Independence Act or the MEGOBARI Act.
