State Security Service arrests Borjomi Mayor, City Assembly Chair for bribe-taking

Officers of Anti-corruption Agency of the State Security Service of Georgia, as a result of operative-searching and investigative activities, detained Chairman of Borjomi Municipality City Assembly, Giorgi Gogichaishvili, and Mayor of Borjomi Municipality, Levan Lipartia, on the fact of bribe-taking, the State Security Service said on Saturday.

According to their information, another citizen – G.U.- has been detained on the fact of failure to report particularly serious crime.

An investigation established that the chairman of Borjomi Municipality City Assembly demanded as a bribe from an entrepreneur sum of money in amount of GEL 200 000 and preliminary took GEL 20 000 in exchange for bringing up Development Regulation Plan at the City Assembly sitting and granting a development permit. The mentioned individual has been detained as soon as the sum of money had been handed over.

The investigation also established that the mayor of Borjomi Municipality, in exchange for protecting of unlawful construction in Bakuriani demanded from the same entrepreneur GEL 10 500 out of which he gradually received 8 000 GEL .

A friend of mayor of Borjomi knew about the mentioned fact – for the citizen G.U. who failed to report it to the law enforcement authorities.

The investigation is in progress on the fact of bribe-taking in especially large quantities and failure to report particularly serious crime (Article 338, paragraph II, sub-paragraphs “B” and “E”. which envisage from 7 to 11 years of imprisonment and article 338, paragraph III, sub-paragraph “E”, which envisages from 11 to 15 years of imprisonment and article 376, paragraph III, which envisages imprisonment from 3 to 7 years).

The investigation is carried out by the Anti-corruption Agency of the State Security Service of Georgia.
