The State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality, Tea Akhvlediani, met with the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O’Flaherty.

During the discussions, the State Minister emphasised the Council of Europe’s steadfast support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders. She also highlighted the significance of the Secretary General’s annual consolidated reports and underscored the Council’s vital role in the peaceful resolution of the conflict, including reconciliation efforts and fostering engagement.

In response to Mr O’Flaherty’s interest, the State Minister provided a detailed briefing on the challenging human rights and humanitarian situation in the occupied regions of Georgia, outlining the serious consequences of the ongoing occupation.

She also addressed the priorities of the reconciliation and engagement policy, sharing progress made in its implementation and outlining future aspirations aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of those affected by the conflict, as well as strengthening dialogue and trust between the artificially divided society based on shared interests.

The Commissioner for Human Rights expressed his gratitude to the State Minister for the comprehensive briefing and assured her that he would pay particular attention to the human rights situation in the occupied territories.

Both parties agreed to continue their close cooperation.
