SSSG detains NGO Head on espionage charges, supplying information to intelligence services of foreign countries
Officers of the Counter-Intelligence Department of the State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG) detained a citizen of Georgia, the founder of a non-governmental organization who, through various platforms, supplied information to intelligence services of two foreign countries, the SSSG announced during a briefing.
According to the SSSG, the investigation determined that the detained individual and NGO founder systematically obtained and transmitted intelligence information to foreign intelligence services for years to gain material benefits and advance the interests of a foreign country.
The individual also organized various activities, and through high-level conspiracy contacts, held online and face-to face meetings outside Georgia.
“The person accused of espionage, on the instructions and with funding from foreign special services, had created information platforms to conduct relevant activities and was also organizing various events across the country.
It is noteworthy that the charged individual simultaneously collaborated with the special services of two foreign states and carried out parallel intelligence activities.
The investigation is in progress under Part 1 of Article 314 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which pertains to imprisonment from 8 to 12 years as a punishment measure,” the SSSG said.
