Special Penitentiary Service affirms journalist Mzia Amaglobeli’s stable health condition amid ongoing hunger strike

The head of the Medical Department of the Special Penitentiary Service, Malkhaz Urtkmelidze, has stated that journalist Mzia Amaglobeli’s health is currently satisfactory and stable.

Urtkmelidze emphasized that the Penitentiary Service urges Mzia Amaglobeli to end her hunger strike for the sake of her health.

“She is under continuous monitoring, and laboratory tests are conducted almost daily. At this time, our latest assessments indicate that there have been no significant changes in her condition,” he reported.

Furthermore, a representative from the Public Defender’s office meets with Amaglobeli daily to stay updated on her health status. Her lawyer is also kept informed upon request.

“We would like to reiterate that the safety and well-being of every inmate is our top priority. At this point, there is no immediate danger to Mzia Amaglobeli’s life, and we will continue to provide diligent care for her health,” Urtkmelidze stated.

“We urge Mzia Amaglobeli to end her hunger strike in the best interests of her health,” he concluded.

Mzia Amaglobeli, founder and director of the media outlets Batumelebi and Netgazeti, has been on a hunger strike for 20 days at Rustavi Prison. The Batumi City Court ordered her imprisonment as a preventive measure on January 14, following her arrest on January 12 under Article 353 of the Criminal Code, which pertains specifically to assaults on police officers.
