Speaker wishes new President commitment to serve Georgian people, state

“Today is a historic Day, a new Constitution envisaging the country’s parliamentary rule completely, has been enacted. Today, at the presidential elections in a Parliament Palace, the Electoral Assembly elected the 6th President of Georgia,” Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili wrote on Facebook.

According to the Speaker, elected with a term of 5 years, the new president will serve the president’s constitutional duties.

“Georgian politics is full of precarious politicians, who are ready each time to act beyond constitutional frameworks for their narrow political interests. The hidden hand in the back remains a puzzle for society.

Such forms of misuse of power violate judicial, supremacy of law and constitutional order foundations in the country. Therefore, the main goal of the newly-elected president will be the fulfilment of his duties with full acknowledgement of honesty, dignity and responsibility.

The key thing I want to wish Mikheil Kavelashvili during his presidential term is the commitment to serve the Georgian people and state. This is the only unmistakable way for any individual in authority,” Papuashvili said.

At the sitting of the Central Election Commission (CEC), The Electoral Assembly elected Mikheil Kavelashvili as Georgia’s Sixth President with a term of five years through non-direct rule for the first time on December 14.

The inauguration of the new president will take place on December 29.

A protest rally is going on at the Georgian parliament in parallel to the presidential elections. The protesters say that the presidential elections is illegitimate, since the parliament is illegitimate.
