Speaker sees hypocrisy in labelling someone violent offender in Berlin while calling same actions peaceful in Tbilisi

“What remarkable hypocrisy – to prosecute someone as a violent offender in Berlin while calling them peaceful in Tbilisi,” Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, stated in a social media post.

Papuashvili shared videos filmed in both Tbilisi and Berlin to illustrate his point. He highlights that in the Berlin footage, a man is seen hurling fireworks at a building, while in the Tbilisi clip, people are throwing pyrotechnics at the parliament building.

“The video on the left was recorded in Berlin in December of last year. The individual who threw fireworks at a house spent four months in pretrial detention, during which the German prosecutor’s office sought a two-year prison sentence. Yesterday, a German court ultimately handed down a six-month suspended sentence, citing an inability to establish intent. The prosecutor’s office has expressed its disagreement with this verdict and has filed an appeal.

The video on the right, likewise recorded in December, was taken in Tbilisi.

How impudent it is to refer to someone facing trial as a violent person in Berlin while calling them a peaceful demonstrator in Tbilisi,” Papuashvili asserted.
