Speaker: Parliament to hold two plenary sessions this week before pre-election break

The Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, outlined the upcoming parliamentary schedule at today’s Bureau session.

According to Papuashvili, two plenary sessions will take place this week, after which plenary work will be paused until the completion of the local elections, in line with parliamentary regulations.

“Today is September 1, tomorrow is the first Tuesday of September, and we will officially open the autumn session,” Papuashvili stated. “Today we are holding an organizational Bureau meeting to register new initiatives. Tomorrow, ahead of the plenary session, the Bureau will meet again to finalize the agenda.”

He noted that the Rules of Procedure stipulate no plenary sessions are held for one month prior to parliamentary or local self-government elections.

“We will have sessions this week, followed by a pause before the elections. Committee work on current issues can continue, and plenary sessions will resume after the elections. If necessary, a plenary session may be called at any time,” Papuashvili added.

This week’s agenda includes the conclusion of the temporary investigative commission, the election of the head of the State Security Service, and the recognition of mandates for 12 new MPs from the For Georgia party. The new members will replace those whose authority has been terminated, following the party’s updated electoral list submitted to the Central Election Commission.

“We will also review current draft laws. Two plenary sessions will be held this week—on Tuesday and Wednesday—after which we will take a break until the elections,” Papuashvili concluded.
